About

A Deansgate room for strings

Shaved Thermos Strings is a small adult-focused studio in Manchester, United Kingdom—built for concentration, not spectacle.

Why we exist

The brand name is odd on purpose. It sticks in memory the way a good open-string A sticks in the ear. Behind the name is a straightforward studio: violin and viola lessons for adults who want craft without the costume of a youth conservatoire.

We opened on Deansgate because the street is a living corridor—easy to reach, easy to leave, and close enough to the city centre that a lesson can sit between work and home without a wilderness commute.

Teaching stance

Feedback is direct and kind. We name what works, isolate what does not, and avoid mystique. Technique is not a secret handshake; it is a set of physical habits you can rehearse. Musicality grows when the hands are free enough to listen.

Students include teachers, designers, nurses, retirees, and people returning after decades away. Ages vary; the shared trait is willingness to practise in small honest blocks.

The room

The studio is street-level enough to feel urban, quiet enough for soft dynamics. Stands, chairs, and a tuned reference pitch wait ready. We keep the space free of visual clutter so your attention stays on sound. No gallery of stock photographs—just the work of listening.

We observe United Kingdom bank holidays and post exceptions by email to active students. Packaged lesson blocks can be arranged month to month; cancellations follow the fair-notice notes on our terms page.

Community, lightly held

Occasionally we host reading evenings for two or three players. These are invitations, not obligations. The studio remains primarily a place for individual craft—community is a spice, not the meal.
